Sweet Corn Seeds – Hjerleid Blue

HEIRLOOM. A sweet corn that turns from white to light when ripe!  This variety of sweet corn was introduced to Seed Savers Exchange by Marvin Gonitzke who received this seed from his coworker Eugene Hjerleid. This corn has been grown since the 1940’s by Eugene’s grandfather, Ludwig Hjerleid in Blair, Wisconsin. Plants grow 4-6 feet tall and bear ears reaching 4-6 inches long. 100 days.

From SSE: “This mid-season-maturing corn topped the list when Seed Savers Exchange staff ranked a dozen corn varieties for flavor in 2018! The ears of this white sweet corn turn a striking dark blue at maturity but are most flavorful (and have tender kernels) when just slightly blue in color.”

Direct seed into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Corn will need full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Plant in blocks rather than rows to ensure good ear development. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, corn will need at least an inch of water per week. Corn is mature about three weeks after it develops “tassels”. Annual. 14 gram packet contains a minimum of 80 seeds.
