Cucurbita pepo
  HEIRLOOM. Introduced to American gardeners in 1890, these slender fruits with light and dark green stripes have superior flavor and dense flesh. Harvest small, ten inches in length or less. 
Direct seed or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Summer squash will need full sun and well-draining soil. Bush habit unless otherwise noted. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, summer squash will need at least an inch of water per week. Once producing, harvest daily while squash is small and tender. I suggest putting these in the the ground, adding water regularly, give some sunlight if you have that in your area, and then be patient. Soon the miracle you learned about in 3rd grade will manifest as flowers.
