Cuminum cyminum
An important spice internationally. 12-18″ tall, this heat loving herb needs about 120 days of growing to obtain mature seeds. The seed has a warm, earthy, slightly bitter flavor that can enhance many different types of dishes. It is especially popular in Indian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, north African, and Mexican cuisines. In addition to its flavorful seeds, the flowers attract beneficial insects such as lacewings, predatory wasps, and ladybugs. Planting it in your garden near crops that tend to suffer from pest infestations can help keep pesky insects under control.
Direct seed or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Cumin will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, cumin will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for seeds. Annual.
